Braden Cooper kicked himself for overlooking the striking difference in the room.

He saw that his huge potted fern had been turned on its side and the terracotta pot had shattered.

Braden didn't own any pets...

he lived alone.

he had a sit down job, a sit down life, no kids to worry about, no criminal record, no nagging wife.

He ate 3 square meals a day and did everything according to routine.

Then he awakens to see his prized fern, barely hanging on to life on the mess of dirt and pot pieces that blanketed the immediate area around the sofa, where the fern used to sit proud and tall.

He checked the door... locked and no forced entry....
He checked the windows... he was paranoid about those...
they were all locked, shuttered and curtains drawn.

he scanned the room... everything was fine. except for the plant.

he was a perfectionist. anything that messed up his rhythm needed to be remedied ASAP. He went to the kitchen closet and reached for the broom and dustpan, to begin the healing process... and he glanced over at the sink, idly...

The sink was stopped up with something.... and was half filled with blood!

His heart thumped. The dustpan and broom clattered to the floor.
He had no scratches... no missing body parts.... Braden was shaking so hard his teeth were chattering. Make it go away. Make it go away. Make it go away. He ran the water and turned on the disposal.

The disposal went 'click' but did not turn on. There was something stuck. He wanted to call the police.. but he realized how strange this would look. he would call when he knew what was going on. he ran around the house... first to the small bathroom...

he was shocked to see that the....

He was shocked to see that the tub was also filled with blood and small lines of drying red also painted themselves along the side and made small puddles on the floor. He had no time to think, no time to try to figure out what could be going on.

He stumbled over to the bathroom sink, and splashed his face with the cool water. He stopped, the water still running, and gripped the side of the small sink with his wet hands. He watched the water swirl around inside. Braden closed his eyes and tryed to will it all away. He slowly breathed in... and out... in... and out... all the time trying to use the sound of the water to take his mind away.

He slowly looked up. It was gone. Everything was gone. His hands werent on the sink and he couldnt hear the water anymore. He was sitting now. His hands were underneath him. His head was throbbing.

Braden could see nothing but bright white lights and a faint something in the distance. Everything was blurry. And then it went black.

After a bit of time, he woke up, and felt a massive headache with his head laying on the bloodied tiles of his bathroom floor. He must have fainted.

He was a bit disoriented. He heard a siren fading in the distance... he moved his hands to the side to brace himself to his feet... but they slipped in the almost gelatinous mess of blood.

It was a fleeting thought... a sudden realization of what went on here...

that thought left quicker than he could remember. As if the answer was on the tip of his tongue but couldn't spit it out.

He knew somehow he was involved.
Carefully, he brought himself to his feet and unthinking, he dried his bloody hands on his white bath towels....

"Ahh FUCK..." then he thought to himself... bloody bath towels are the LEAST of his concerns!

He knew he shouldn't make a phone call right now, because someone was probably tapping it, or something.... that's the way it always worked, right?

"Well, fuck, I'm not stayin around here!!

So he cleaned himself off and began to dress in different clothes. He looked at his abdomen, there was a huge gash that had scabbed over...

What the hell? Where the fuck did that come from?

He closed his eyes, paced his breathing and finished dressing.

He walked out of the front door and down the walk
outside his house... everything seemed normal.
Whew.
He got in his Volkswagen Rabbit and puttered off.

He drove to

-wards the police station, but a nagging urge to turn away grew in him so great, that he turned off the road and rubbed his temples. His poor aching head, it felt like he hadn't slept all night, and yet he remembered turning in, drawing the covers over himself perfectly, even if his memory had been flakey of late.

He drove in circles for awhile just thinking, trying to figure out where he should go, what he should do. He wanted to go to work, but thought he should talk to the police. Instead he stopped at a payphone, left an anonymous tip about a break-in at his address with the police operator, and walked back to his car.

So it was, with trepidition that he eventually turned up there an hour late at the office. He worked in mangagement at the Aracnum Jam Factory. He always said that if someone needed to get their ass out of a jam, he was the man for it. Only it seemed that his ass that was in a jam this time, and he just couldn't put all the pieces together. His life was too normal, unbearably normal for something like this to ever happen to him. It always happened to other people, but why him this time? They always asked that didn't they?

After half an hour a police officer called, while he was busy at his desk indexing a corporate expenditure spreadsheet for the accounting office.
